Concern Trolling 101

(cross-posted at Clintonistas for Obama)

I have a confession to make. I'm not a Clinton supporter turned Obama backer.

I'm just a lowly concern troll.

And yet, I'm a diabolical genius because I tricked nearly all of you. Naïve fools! But don't worry, I'm going to tell you how. I wouldn't want you to make the grave error of mistaking concern trolling for genuine support ever again. For all you Clinton supporters out there, let this diary be your guide to concern trolling. Obama supporters are all 13 years old, so even though I'm sitting here, flat out telling them I'm a concern troll, they still won't get it. Their young, puerile, undeveloped minds still won't process it - kids have poor reading comprehension, you know, and they all have ADD nowadays, anyway. Thank god we're all old, wizened, spinsters. So pull up a chair, put your 30 cats in your lap, and read carefully.

  • The first step in becoming a good concern troll is lying your ass off for about three months. Painful as it is, you're going to need to start complimenting Obama. Say he's a good candidate (a lie), talk about his good policy positions (bigger lie), and mention how cute he and his kids are together (EPIC LIE!). That's the key - praise the whole family, even though you're afraid of them because they're dark. I know this is hard, so pop a few pills and develop Percocet habit if you have to.

  • Now that you've got a few Obama supporters trusting you and thinking you're a decent Clinton supporter, you need to start consistently defending Obama. No matter what happens, you've got to have his back (publicly, anyway - privately, you're still hoping his campaign implodes). Brush aside all the faux scandals, even if you're cheering on the inside. Even though you know Obama viciously shot Hillary the finger, PRETEND like you think it's absurd! Granted, giving someone the finger means "f*ck you," which implies that Obama wants Hillary to be raped, but laugh about it, anyway!

  • Don't just defend Obama, defend his associates (like Wright), too. Pretend you respect Black Liberation Theology, even though you don't because black people are, as I said, often quite dark. Black Liberation Theology is frightening and uppity, but put aside your fears. Remember, you're safe in your home with your army of cats, and you had your dad record the message on your answering machine so that people would think a man lives with you. Black folks can't hurt you there.

  • Here comes the hardest part: Criticize your own candidate. Yes, you read me right. You're going to have to call Hillary out sometimes, even though you secretly approve of everything she does. Even if she wiped her runny nose on Obama's suit sleeve and stole his cufflinks, you'd still think it was totally cool, and you'd send her a massive donation as a reward. This is especially difficult because Hillary is GOD. But still, you're a great actress, so pick an issue, and agree with the Obama supporters when they criticize Hillary.

  • Pretend you don't watch Hillary at all her rallies and then go out and buy matching pantsuits. I know you do - we all do it - but you've got to pretend. That's the key.

  • Now you need to criticize other Hillary supporters. This sucks, and it's hard, but you need to call them out when they go after Obama harshly. They're right, of course, Obama is a secret Moozlimm!1!!!11!! But hey, ya gotta make some sacrifices. Piss other Clinton supporters off because it'll benefit you in the end, when you finally begin trolling.

  • When Obama supporters go after our girl, try to respond calmly. Fly off the handle occasionally, but not every time. If you're finding this difficult, there are several steps you can take. If by some miracle you still haven't entered menopause, go take a Midol for the vicious mood swings brought on by your raging periods. If you have begun menopause (very likely), go take your estrogen supplements and antidepressants. That should help you with your moodiness, hot flashes, and vaginal dryness.

  • When Obama wins the nomination, give him your blessing - supposedly because Hillary endorsed him, and he supports the same policies you support - but secretly keep on hating him. By this point, you've got most of the Obama supporters fooled, but you're not quite finished...

  • Join a group of Clinton supporters supposedly dedicated to getting Obama elected. Naturally, you're all plotting against him in secret, but few people will guess that because Obama supporters are infantile kids who still play with their food and gnaw on their gum wayyy too loudly.

  • Now write several diaries in defense of Obama. Attack McCain as much as possible, even if he's better than the crappy Democratic nominee. Also attack PUMA (a courageous and productive movement).

  • Donate to the Obama campaign. I know this is tough because you're all poor and uneducated, but you've GOT to take this step! It legitimizes your "support". It's all for a good cause, so when you get this email in your inbox, try not to vomit:

Dear * * *,

Thank you for your generous donation of $50.00.

Your gift will be immediately put to work building a campaign to change our country and our politics for the better.

There will be much more to come in the weeks and months ahead thanks to your support.

Thank you again for your donation.

Obama for America
http://www.BarackObama.com

  • Now that you've fooled at least 90% of the Obama supporters, commence trolling! Write a diary criticizing Obama on one or two of his positions! It will help if you choose a stance (like the FISA compromise) that at least 16,000+ of his real supporters are also angry about! This is very clever, and you are full of win. To make sure you keep fooling people, be sure to praise Obama a great deal during that same concern troll diary. Contrast him with McCain and talk about how much better Obama is. This is another lie, but don't worry about it. Lying rules, and you're awesome at it.

If you take all of these steps, you'll soon become a successful concern troll just like me! If any Obama supporters managed to read this entire diary, please ignore what I just said and go back to your video games. Take your Ritalin and get out of my hair (which smells like cat litter because I have a million cats, which keep breeding because I can't afford to spay and neuter them because I'm so stupid and broke). Clinton supporters, remember that we're all WINNARS, and take satisfaction in knowing you've tricked most of Bambi's cult followers. A few geniuses will figure out your game, but that's very rare. For the most part, you win. Now go feed your cats. They're starving.

This is you... after your big WIN!11!!!!1!

And one final note:

Go McCain!

Actually, that's not really true.  I heard that a family of 4 was killed by snark in Salt Lake City last Summer.  It was pretty gruesome, and they actually had to use dental records to identify the bodies.

You do know you have the respect of many here as long you don't find any dissenting voice let alone a conscious.

Re: Concern Trolling 101 (2.00 / 2)

You're mistakenly aligning yourself with the people who really are the near worthless Obama-fashing trolls. We know legitimate debate and concern, and we certainly know who engages in it in good faith.

It's impossible to write our complaints as such: "I'm tired of the Obama hatred coming from the concern-trolls and PUMA-types, which excludes colebiancardi, canadian gal, sricki, sevenstrings, psychodrew, etc., etc."

It should be clear even to you guys who the real targets of our anger are. They're the ones who NEVER had anything positive to say about Obama.

They're the ones who don't even post or comment here with any regularity, either now or ever. If they're new, then understandably, their Obama-bashing will be suspect. But for some of the self-exiles, they left simply because they couldn't stomach the thought of supporting Obama or being on our side...better to take refuge in some low-traffic blog where they can stew in their own misery together.

They're the ones who come back with sockpuppets of banned names.

They're the ones too cowardly to engage in real debate, and are reduced to insults, drive-by TRs of Obama supporters, and drive-by mojo for all their old chums on the Clinton side of the old divide.

You know who those people are, and they're not you. Yet you would allow those people to be protected under cover of your reputation here?

Most people know better. I wrote this diary because I need to vent after this exchange. Me, of all people, called a concern troll. It struck a nerve because I've gone so far out of my way to be a good sport and support the nominee. I'm glad to do it, FISA compromise notwithstanding. I want him to be the next president, and I'm going to do everything I can to help put him in the White House.

But I voice one bit of criticism in three months, and someone calls me a concern troll? Annoyed the hell out of me.

Re: Concern Trolling 101 (1.00 / 3)

We must all remember that the most important issue in this election cycle is the playground politics at MyDD, and whether we are shown proper respect for our ever-so-profound diaries and comments here. Think of the dozens of voters we might alienate! Think of the hurt feelings! I weep for the pain and suffering of my Clintonista comrades, who daily must endure salt being rubbed into the wounds of their recent gallant battles. I lose sleep when I think of how my country will fair under a President who will not change to satisfy the hard working diarists and commenters at MyDD!

have also been called concern trolls today, by you and others. Thought I'd vent my frustration so that I could write a productive pro-Obama diary tomorrow or Sunday.

You did hit a nerve. It was difficult for a lot of us to switch our unwavering support over to Obama the day Hillary conceded. We did it, anyway, and it's insulting when people like you apply double standards to us. I don't see anyone complaining about all the Obama supporters who've expressed their dissatisfaction.

Re: Several of my other friends (1.50 / 4)

Well maybe just maybe, if people are calling you and your pals concern trolls it is because they think you are.....concern trolls.

I don't see anyone complaining about all the Obama supporters who've expressed their dissatisfaction.

Why do you suppose that is?

I would never call Kos a concern troll.  He takes swipes at Obama quite often.  So have most of the front pagers over at Daily Kos.  Yet I would never think to call them concern trolls. Glenn Greenwald, IMO, is one of the best progressive bloggers on the net yet he is holding Obama's feet to the fire over this FISA thing.  Still, no one is calling him a concern troll.

Yet you and your pals at Clintonistas for Obama think you automatically deserve the respect I afford Kos and Greenwald simply because you claim to support Obama.  That isn't good enough.  You haven't earned the benefit of the doubt and it is something that has to be earned.

You are continuously finding fault with Obama.  You claim he betrayed you over his possible FISA vote even though your chosen candidate was further to the center than he is on FISA.  Weeks after you and your pals hopped on the Obama bandwagon you guys have nothing good to say about the man and write diary after diary complaining about him.  I find that behavior concern troll like.

There are a lot of reasons to act like a concern troll that have nothing to do with who wins in November.  Some CT's just do it to piss off their former primary opponents.  I think you and your pals are members of this species of concern troll.  If you truly want to earn the benefit of the doubt then stop holding Obama up to an unrealistic standard.  Despite what your fellow blogger thinks, Obama is nothing more than a typical Washington policitian.  He isn't the second coming.  (please excuse me for making a Christian reference)

In short, I think you are a concern troll.  The amount of time you spend defending yourself is telling. If I called you a cattle rustler I don't think you would write a diary about it.

Considering the fact that I was a Clinton supporter, I hardly think I'm one to bash professional women's clothing. I'm a woman myself, and you certainly won't find me working in a ball gown. Snark: Such a dangerous thing in these parts.

I wrote this diary because an Obama supporter called me a concern troll for questioning his stance on FISA. I didn't write it to criticize Hillary.

Uh no you'd be called a sexist if you underplayed her DECADES of experience if you would've given credit to a male counterpart with the same experience, which I  believe most Americans would. It is just the double standard in effect.

And there is NOTHING funny about the disturbing issues of gender bias, discrimination & misogyny which have been highlighted, as being worse then I know I anticipated, during this primary. I don't care who you support; it is like finding humor in any other tragic circumstance. I mean hey let's make fun of lynchings too while we are at - same thing. It is just not funny - it is horrifying.

Uh yeah I got your snark (see below). I don't find humor in the events that unfolded - I think they are blight on this country's history & find it deeply disturbing.  Can't laugh about the ignorance that has been highlighted this go around or the fact that  things are alot worse for me in this country then I thought. Just don't have it in me yet. And the ridicule of the little women dressing in prof'l clothes reminds me of how lightly people seem to think of all this (which is one of the things you snarked about except it is disturbing not funny).

Re: Concern Trolling 101 (2.00 / 2)

Quite a few genuine Obama supporters are concerned.
That doesn't make them trolls and their concern is genuine and should be discussed.
sricki, canadian gal, colebiancardi, my admiration for you is without limit. Your concerns have been voiced by others who supported Obama from the start.

Having said this, I must say that I don't really see Obama contradicting his positions, shifting drastically or betraying his ideas.

For one thing Obama always said he was one who accepts points of views which are not his own, has conversations with people with whom he disagrees, and tries fo find acceptable compromises to get things done. He always said that; that's part of his 'new politics' package. You may not like it but he never hid this aspect of his philosophy.
He's a realist.

Where has he flip-flopped? Iraq, abortion, public funding: I don't see that he's flip-flopped.

FISA: FISA is the only subject on which it may be argued that he shifted to the right. For one thing I doubt that HRC would have had a different position on FISA. Nothing indicates so much. But of course he's the nominee. I respect my favorite Clintonistas enough to be certain that, had HRC been the nominee and had she taken the same stance as Obama on FISA they would have been equally concerned.

I don't know US politics well enough to have a clear position on the FISA issue. I just note that
Obama's position is pragmatic (not a surprise, coming  from him) and that he says he disagrees with the amnesty. I have no reason to doubt that if/once POTUS he will alter US policies in this respect.

I agree that FISA is a huge issue but it should be discussed more dispassionately and not in a spirit
of suspicion or accusation.

On several occasion I've noticed a propensity among staunch supporters (and even more at Kos than here) to get all worked up about supposed mistakes from Obama, which soon turned out not to be mistakes at all (like the so-called throwing_under-the-bus of gen. Clark).

Somehow I feel a certain lack of confidence in Obama, both from recent supporters (which is natural) and from older supporters, which is more worrisome. I don't quite know what to make of it,
but I think that, at this stage, while it is perfectly ok to criticize the democratic nominee,
I don't see that it is very productive. Obama must be elected. He's doing his best to achieve that, and I think he knows his job pretty well - infinitely better than I do in any case. Once he's elected he'll need you to remind him constantly what he's supposed to be standing for. But right now, I think that a supportive attitude, accompanied with a certain amount of provisional suspension of disbelief, would help better...

by french imp on Fri Jul 04, 2008 at 06:59:29 PM EST

You're right, he must be elected. (2.00 / 2)

You know I don't often criticize him, and FISA has really been the only thing. I don't think he's flipped on Iraq, abortion, public financing, etc. I do lack confidence that he'll do everything the way I want him to. I don't lack confidence that he'll make an excellent president. I have faith that he will.

I'll be posting a much more supportive diary tomorrow or Sunday. I feel better now that I've vented, and I'm getting some of my optimism back.

Thank you for not considering us trolls! You aren't a troll, either. ;)
